T&T VALUES
FITNESS SHOULD COME WITH BEING OUTSIDE IN NATURE. THE TRAINING LAB IS MERELY A TOOL TO GET US THERE.

Helping people reach a pathway to longevity
Training methods that respect human biology
Focused efforts based on YOUR physiological needs
Attain higher function in daily life & stress reducing activities
I'M JOSHUA!
BIOMECHANICS SPECIALIST
From the age of 14, focused preparation has been my greatest asset. I excelled in individual sports such as martial arts and coaches took notice. From that point forward Olympic-level competition was the goal, which in turn molded my fierce, determined nature.
Success however, was cut short by way of injuries. Years of traditional weight training, extreme degrees of stretching & fighting through the agony of it all, led to spine surgery less than two years out of high school.
Given my history with sport, the science of training was a welcomed move as a profession. However, with years of schooling & working as a “professional,” I still could not address my own weaknesses and pain. Even after surgery, no one could tell me how things had gone awry. So I limped along for another 15 years until the pain, depression, & chronic illness were becoming untenable. In my pursuit for solutions, I was fortunate to have found this amazing training system called Functional Patterns. It’s an understatement to say it improved my life both personally and professionally.

At 46, I’m experiencing life without pain or limitation. I engage in my outlets of backpacking, alpinism, and sprinting. Best of all, I am able to improve my abilities with each passing year. I’m getting better with age!
A humbling experience when you realize how fragile the body is and how you exercise may not have the desired outcome, especially long term. Fitness shouldn't be associated with how we look aesthetically or how well you perform in a sport. It's about finding ways to sustain longevity. Getting out of bed for years to come, free from pain and illness. In nature, thriving in activities that ease stress and provoke a sense of well-being.
That’s health. That’s living.

STAND, WALK, RUN & THROW

THE CORE FUNDAMENTALS THAT EXPLAIN WHY WE LOOK & MOVE THE WAY WE DO
Why is this an important consideration when we exercise? Bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia are oriented to support these functions. Anthropology teaches us that it took hundreds of thousands of years to refine these movements out of priority for survival, therefore they are deeply embedded in who we are as a species. In the field of fitness and training, rarely if at all are these fundamentals accounted for.
What is the SAID Principle? One of the most extraordinary features of the human body is it's ability to adapt. In the fields of physical rehabilitation and sports training, the SAID Principle (Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands) argues that the body will adapt in a specific fashion to better cope with the demands placed on it. For example, playing a guitar. The neurons responsible for the coordinated finger actions will develop more efficient lines of communication between themselves. Sitting for prolonged periods of time; the body can structurally morph itself around that position. Mechanical stress such as resistance training; tendons and ligaments will thicken and muscles will strengthen in response. Bottom line, whether the stressor is biomechanical or neurological, we’re always trying to learn how to better resist that specific form of stress in the future.
Why traditional means of training is ineffective and possess long-term risks? Heavy weight training that compresses the spine and joints. Movement practices that emphasize extreme bends and stretches. Sooner or later those applications wire in neurological patterns and exert damaging forces that impede upon what is vital to our nature. The result isn’t a body that is healthy and capable. Rather, it is one compromised by destructive patterns, eventually leading to chronic pain and injury. As it relates back to the attributes that make us human; the SAID Principle is not adhered to in a way that respects how we function biomechanically & neurologically. Simply put, they don’t simulate the connections that make us human.
How is T&T different? In essence, the human body is too complex for us to aimlessly subject it to potentially damaging methods. If the objective is to strengthen ourselves with the goal of being healthier, resilient to injury, adaptable to stress & improve athletic performance; then we must train in accordance to our innate programming. To become strong and functional - and for it to be sustainable - we must first establish a baseline for improvement that is relevant to our nature. In our case, it goes back to the inherent biological features of - Stand, Walk, Run & Throw.
Why is T&T better? Homeostasis is a regulating process we instinctively strive for. In all its complexity, the ability to stand properly and move fluently plays a key role in achieving that state. At T&T Project, I remove ambiguous methods of training by applying a process unique to the needs of every client. A process designed to correct weaknesses and executed with the utmost precision - leading to the most refined version of yourself.
